Review: AX Paris Curve Zip Front Bird Dress

Boombands Em in the Bird Print Zip Front Dress by AX Paris Curve

AX Paris Curve is a bit of a newcomer to our world of Plus Fashion and as they launched their collection recently - Twitter went wild. It was an amazing night, with many girls really excited by what was on offer. My only frustration? No size chart! Well - after chatting with AX Paris, I've been assured a size breakdown is on it's way and when I was offered a piece to review - I turned to blogs for an indication of required sizing. I was told by one trusty source (Pocket Rocket), that I should look at the clothes I wear at Yours and go from there... At Yours, I average about a size 22. Mind you, thanks to Hanna doing a "change room run" on the exact garment I wanted to review, I knew that the Zip Front Bird Dress had very little fabric stretch through the breast - so I sized up to a 24... GOOD CHOICE.

That's something to note Ladies... Sizing, ultimately, is just a number. If you need to size up or size down to find the right fit - it doesn't matter, the outfit just needs to look banging. I know from other blog reviews - that had this dress contained jersey or elastane - the 22 would have done me fine. Don't let sizing define you - just do your best to look fab and feel confident - because ultimately - THAT goes a long way.

So, clearly - the shape on this garment is really great. This fits me snug through my breasts, but with room for me to move and feel comfortable. The zip-front is nice and indeed, a slightly alluring feature. The drape through the skirt is amazing and has a real tulip look and feel to it. This dress has a nice amount of room through the waist which makes it a light, airy choice for the warmer months. That being said - the front hem is ruched slightly higher between the legs - so for me, this will probably always be worn with tights or leggings. This dress has pockets, a smooth texture (it's 100% Polyester) and a lovely shape that's inherent in the pleated tailoring. This dress has been really nicely made - it is soft, but highly structured and it gives me an effortless shape that looks beautiful and natural.

Seriously, this dress makes me excited to try more from AX Paris Curve.

There are lots of nice items over at AX Paris Ladies, and it's exciting to think that another brand is buying into the Curve market. To be honest - this is what we need to happen. The brands who do these initial buy-ins of plus-size clothing will stock more and extend their sizing range so long as they make sales and hit targets. I plan to help them do it!

I love this dress and feel lucky to share it with you. I already know this one's gonna be a wardrobe front-runner for me - a veritable "go to" dress for work, socialising and generally looking awesome.

I kept my look simple with this garment. The dress is Navy with a Fawn Bird Print and Dirty Gold Central Zip, I paired it with a Vintage Handbag, Black Leggings, Baby Bolero, Simple Jewelery and Knee High Boots.

  1. Cor you look great in that. It gives you a super silhouette, especially in that first pic. It reminds me a bit of the Beth Ditto blue velvet dress from the second (last) collection.

  4. You look lovely in it, I'd love the dress if it wasn't for the zip, I just have a real hatred for zips!! But I love seeing clothes on someone with a similar size & shape to me!! I think I'll get AXParis Curve in a size 24 too! Xx

  5. Absolutely love this tunic on you! I ordered it in the 26 when Curve first launched and it wouldn't do up over my boobs, so I haven't returned since. BUT I'm envious of how amazing you look in it!

  6. I love this dress on you! I've heard of the brand but haven't shopped from them... yet. I've given up worrying about the size stitched in the clothes. I have four different sizes in my wardrobe that all fit! It really does depend on fabric and style and where you shop.

  11. WOW!!! I looked on the site before your post and nothing appealed to me, but after seeing you in this I ordered it immediately. It looks amazing on you.

You're right about the sizing, I ordered the 20, which is my normal size for the bust, but wanted to try the 22 which they didn't have. The 20 looked really lovely on me, which was a major surpirse as I don't suit dresses due to having a dodgy distribution of fat, big top, small bottom! Sadly though the 20 was so tight on the bust that I think I'd have ripped it with one deep breath, but today they have the 22 in so I have re-ordered, and ordered the 24 to be safe!! They also have it now in a fish print too.

  12. Please can I just add (because I read loads of AX Paris curve reviews before I ordered & for some reason it's never mentioned!) that all these clothes are designed for short plus sized women. I loved this dress but thought it looked ridiculously short on the website. On you Em it's a perfectly acceptable length so I threw caution to the wind and ordered it. What a disaster! The zip on this dress covered my lady garden by less than an inch! I'm a size 22 (all over the body, not just in certain areas) and so I got a 24 just to be safe, and although it was lovely on the waist I couldn't zip it up over my breasts. I totally agree that it doesn't matter what size you order (who will know other than you?!) but if a size 22 woman has to get a size 26 dress (the biggest AX paris curve offers) then size 24 & 26 women won't be able to get something to fit them unless its stretchy! Hopefully this dress is not the rule but the exception because otherwise only providing to women a size 22 or under is not much of a 'plus size' range in my opinion. And for any woman of average height or above, this dress (and probably the others on the site looking at the photographs) are more like tops. Such a shame because if this was longer and took boobs into account it would have been one of the nicest shaped dresses I'd found in ages!

  13. Hi Anonymous,

That's a really good set of points. I have just ordered a Tunic in a 22, so will see how that goes. The description states a degree of elastic in the fabric composition... We'll see.

Height wise, I would call myself average, rather than short, at 5'5. I think I have mentioned I'll need to wear tights with this due to the fact it is quite a high cut, which is directly caused by length. Next time I'll be much clearer. I completely agree that women taller than myself could have issues with this length.

I also agree that this range really needs to run to higher sizes, so hope the current line takes off, thereby encouraging them to extend. I totally see your point on that.

I will keep you posted on how I do with the Tunic and as I have also bought the Fish Print version of this dress - I will follow up with how I go with that one too.

    Xxx.
